When I was asked to preach a trial sermon at the church I have now served almost three decades, I refused. “Every preacher has two good sermons, so I will do something different,” I told the search committee. When I stood to preach, I quoted John 3:16 and stopped. “That’s it?” someone asked. Yes, that’s “it.” That simple truth is the totality of the Bible. Everything in its 66 books, 1,189 chapters, 30,442 verses and 845,000 words is summed up in the sublime revelation that God gave His Son to atone for our sins.
