God Is Good

“If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”  Matthew 7:11 (tniv)

My husband and I have something we laugh about between us. He is Mr. Doom and Gloom while I’m Miss Blissfully Unaware.

When driving to his parents’ house for Christmas, he said things like, “Let’s hope the pass isn’t snowed in,” and “Let’s hope our car doesn’t break down,” and “Let’s hope we don’t get lost.”

I got annoyed with him because while the weather report talked about snow, it didn’t say anything about a blizzard. We had a rental car, so even if it did break down, we’d get towed and the car would be replaced pretty quickly. And aside from the fact we had a GPS unit, it wasn’t like we were going somewhere completely new, so it was unlikely we’d get lost.

Being the not-so-tactful wife, I teased him: “Are you trying to create bad luck?”

We shouldn’t be heedless and blithely disregard danger, but we also shouldn’t be expecting God to slam us with problems left and right. God is good. It’s repeated over and over throughout the Bible. Even when trials come, God is with us because God is good.

Jesus made a point of challenging a rich young man to think about why he’d called Jesus a “good” teacher. Jesus reminded him, “No one is good except God alone.” He won’t make our lives problem free, but He will bless us and give us good things. His blessings give us more than we could ever have wanted, because He loves us and He is good.

FAITH STEP: Are you worrying and expecting pitfalls in your life? Stop right there and remind yourself that God is good.
