Grace and Mercy

She is not afraid of adversity, because she is spiritually prepared for trails (Proverbs 31:21).

Coaching and adversity go hand in hand. Each day a coach has to deal with strategy, personnel, opposing coaches, referees, schedules, planning, travel, and this list goes on.

Every decision that is made has the potential to cause hurt feelings, anger, confusion and all manner of misunderstanding. Let's just say that our chosen profession is not for the fainthearted.  So how can we spiritually prepare ourselves to handle the daily trials we face?

Matthew 6:33 says, "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."

Basically, Jesus is saying that if we keep our eyes fixed on Him and pursue Him above all else, He will handle the rest. When I began my first college coaching job, I was not seeking God, and my focus was solely on achieving my own coveted agenda. As the intense pressure increased, I began to experience anxiety attacks and despair. I was failing miserably, and God let me fall. He knew I would end up on my face at the foot of the cross. I was broken! But in that brokenness, I found new life in Jesus.

Proverbs 28:1(NASB) says, "The wicked flee when no one is pursuing, but the righteous are bold as a lion."

Since that turning point in my life I've learned to seek Him first. Yes, there are days when I glance away or lose my focus, but I quickly recognize my need for complete dependence on Him. That is the only way to manage the fiery trials of this life. Not only can we overcome adversity but we can take the offensive too!

Prayer

Lord, I will seek you first in humble trust!  Give me Your righteousness, so I can step out in faith with the boldness of a lion.
