Your Race Course

Description

We can have joy as we endure the race that the Lord has set before us, knowing that He is the designer of the course.

I'm not much of an athlete. I admit it. Oh, I've attempted to play sports in the past, but the key word is "attempted." But even with my limited abilities I've actually run in a relay race—once. Whether you consider yourself a runner or a sideline cheerleader, one thing is evident: the race is run on a course that has been "set." The course is predetermined by the track designer.

I love this little detail tucked into Hebrews 12:

Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us (v. 1, emphasis added).

The Race Is Set
The race that is set before us. Doesn't that give you goosebumps? Do you feel a rush of adrenaline and thrill? It is so exciting to know that I don't have to chart my own course (like that would work out brilliantly) or manipulate my circumstances to fit my expertly designed "master plan." I can take courage and great comfort in the knowledge that my future has been planned by the One who knows me best, loves me most, and has no problem accomplishing His purposes!

If that's not enough to get your heart racing, read what Ephesians says about this:

He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will … having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will (Ephesians 1:4–5, 11).

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them (Ephesians 2:10).

No need to fear. We are not wandering aimlessly without purpose or direction. Our heavenly Father has "set" a course for us to run. He has good and worthy purposes for you. He will provide the grace you need in order to not only run the race—but to run it with joy!

Get honest with God. Have you been going through the motions of a joyless and dry Christian existence? If so, that is NOT what God has provided for you. Approach Him now and offer your empty cup; ask Him to fill it. Ask Him to use His Word to bring revival to your weary heart.

Don't settle for less than walking in His presence—and remember—in His presence is fullness of joy!
