And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God (1 Corinthians 6:11, 12).

Believe

Who are you? Often, Christians will answer that question with “I’m just an old sinner saved by grace”.

But is that true?

It is true that you were once a sinner. Adam passed that identity on to you. Paul explained this in his letter to the Romans: “For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners…” (Romans 5:19). That was your identity when you came into the world.

But when you were born again, you were given a brand new identity. “But to all who did receive him, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God” (John 1:12,13).

You are a child of God, a saint by calling. Look at this verse in Romans: To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 1:7). He starts his letters to the Corinthians in the same way.

Yes, we were all once sinners. That is what we once were. But as Paul wrote, “...you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:11, 12).

You are no longer an “old sinner”; you are loved by God and called to be a saint.

It may sound humble to call yourself an old sinner saved by grace. I get that. But, the fact is, it’s not true.

Live

Grab hold of your identity in Christ. It is God given, and it will never change. See yourself as God sees you–perfect in His sight. Pretty soon you will start living out who you are in Christ. And I guarantee, you will like what you see.
