Working at God’s Work

Description

How many of us have taken on a life of meaningless works to avoid the reality of serving God according to His will?

“You are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
(Luke 10:41-42 NIV)

I once heard someone laughingly say, “I’m not physically able to be a Baptist.”

Christians who apply themselves to fruitless effort in the name of the Lord busy themselves to the point of exhaustion, going to conferences and countless church activities and serving on many committees. However, they are rarely, if ever, quiet enough for the Lord to direct them. They are irritable and often envious of others. They are truly working at God’s work and not in it.

When Jesus was visiting Martha’s home, she complained to the Lord that she was stuck doing all the “important” work while Mary was just sitting and listening to Him. We see what Jesus replied in today’s Scripture verse.

How many of us have taken on a life of meaningless works to avoid the reality of serving God according to His will?

Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth” (Psalm 46:10).
