Work and Money

Description

John Jackson explores the concepts of work and money as it is presented in the Scriptures.

I want to take a stab at the concepts of work and money.  First, let’s look at work:

"Jesus said to them, 'My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working'” (John 5:17)

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers, to keep away from every brother who is idle and does not live according to the teaching you received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to make ourselves a model for you to follow. For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “If a man will not work, he shall not eat.” (II Thessalonians 3:6-10)

God is a worker!  He created us as workers; what He wants is for us to be His co-workers!  Working hard is a good thing, and all legitimate work helps us to serve others, meet our family’s needs, and be able to give to the work of God in the world today. In short, it is a way for us to demonstrate our love for God.  Let me give you a few additional points of focus related to work:

Working hard is worth doing!

“We are fools for Christ, but you are so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are honored, we are dishonored! To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless. We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; when we are slandered, we answer kindly. Up to this moment we have become the scum of the earth, the refuse of the world.” (I Corinthians 4:10-13)

Work is not welfare!

"He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need.” (Ephesians 4:28)

Work is worship!

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." (Colossians 3:23-24)

Work is witness!

"Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.” (I Thessalonians 4:11-12)
