Why You Aren't Dead Yet
About six months ago I read a blog by Michael Hyatt that really got my attention. He had read a book dealing with the topic of why we are not dead yet. He summarized the major reasons from the book. I began to meditate on why I was not dead yet and came up with my own list. Four reasons came to mind.
First, I am not dead because God wants me to be alive! He is big enough to protect me and extend my life in spite of my struggle with cancer. He is an all-powerful God, so what is so hard about His keeping me alive? Second, He wants me and everyone else alive so we have an opportunity to trust in Jesus for eternal life. Do not the Scriptures say that He does not want any to perish but that all would come to repentance (2 Pet. 3:9)? God keeps us alive so we can experience the joy of real life, which is found only in Jesus Christ. Third, He wants us to obey Him. A powerful mark of genuine faith is not just saying we believe in Christ but living in such a way that people know we are authentic. Fourth, God keeps us alive to fulfill His intended purposes for us.
I cannot tell you why He has chosen to extend my life (a senior adult) when He allows others much younger to die. Some things are beyond comprehension, and we allow Satan to cheat us out of life’s best if we bail on God because we do not understand His ways. If we could fully understand Him, why would we need Him? Read the story of Moses’ death, and you will understand more (Deut. 34:1-12).
As a leader, I challenge you to wrestle with this issue. Review the reasons I gave. Come up with your own. Go through the list one at a time. Whatever you do, do not miss God’s best for your life and ministry. He is worthy of our trust, and He will use us in ways we could not possibly imagine.
