Why Believing Leads to Obeying

We can fight to stay free from offense, realizing His ways are always higher than ours. We can choose to obey.

Therefore, to you who believe, [Jesus] is precious; but to those who are disobedient, “The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone,” and “a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense.” 1 Peter 2:7–8 NKJV

Few people today would draw a connection between the word believe and the concept of obedience. In the eyes of most, belief has become a mere acknowledgment of fact. But did you catch it? In the passage above, the words believe and disobedient are represented as opposites!

The truth is, even if we are trained in many of God’s ways, we are still likely to have an opportunity to be offended with Jesus. But we can fight to stay free from offense, realizing His ways are always higher than ours. And we can choose to obey.

It is not difficult to obey when you know the character and love of the one to whom you are submitting. Love is the bottom line in our relationship with the Lord—not love of principles or teachings but love for the Person of Jesus Christ. That love keeps us safe from offense and stumbling.

There’s another side to the truth in Peter’s words—one of which you should be aware. If you are going to obey the Spirit of God, people will be offended by you too. Jesus says:

“The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” John 3:8 NKJV

Some will not understand you as you move with the Spirit. Don’t allow their response to deter you from what you know in your heart is true. Believe and obey!

What is an attribute or promise of God that dismantles fear and empowers you to obey in faith? Meditate on it! As you seek God this week, allow His Word to become rooted in your heart, laying a firm foundation for what you believe. Then, ask the Holy Spirit for the grace to act on your beliefs—to be free from offense at God and submit to His will.
