White Noise

If modern conveniences easily shut you out of your communication with the Lord? Lori Dixon tells us to unplug from this world and plug into His presence.

I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. (Psalm 119:15 ESV)

Our dog has massive ears for her body size. As she was a pound rescue, we aren’t exactly sure where she inherited these bat-like ears, but she makes a good watch dog as she hears everything. That being said, when we are sleeping and she hears a cat three blocks away crying out in the night and decides to bark like an idiot, we are none-too-pleased of her protective reflexes.

As a result, we bought a white noise machine for our bedroom. Soft hums of the ocean drum out any outside activity, keeping our little mutt quiet and our sleep sound.

This has proven to be a blessing, but last week when we were away from home, neither my husband Don nor I could sleep. A few restless nights later I realized why – we missed our white noise! Our bodies had grown accustomed to the soft swooshing of waves and couldn’t shut down without it.

As I lay in bed unable to sleep, I began to think about the things in my life that shut out the still quiet whisper of the Holy Spirit in my life. Things that drum out and distract me, lulling me into a spiritual sleep: televisions, smartphones, iPods . . . the list is long. Modern conveniences can easily shut out our communications with our Lord. Oh how I need to unplug from this world more often and plug into His presence.

Father, forgive us for filling our heads with distractions when we should be meditating on Your Word and waiting to hear from You. Help us to shut out the white noise around us so that we can hear what You are trying to speak into our lives.
