Where's Your Light?
“You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in my house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14–16 (nrsv)
Where’s my light? Is it hidden in a closet, behind closed drapes, or tucked in a cupboard? Or is it out where others can see it—written on my face, energizing my behavior, enlivening my words and animating the best that is in me?
I cannot be a hidden Christian, silent when I should speak up or going along with the status quo when I know it’s wrong. Neither can I go without explaining my light to others and putting it into action to serve the needs of others. The Bible tells us to be doers of the Word, not only hearers.
Why would anyone want to extinguish the light of a city or allow a lighthouse to go dim in the midst of a storm? Why would anyone live in a darkened house without switching on a lamp or drive at night without headlights? And why would I have the light of Christ in me and not want to share it?
FAITH STEP: What are the ways you can let your light shine? Make a list of things you can do and act on one of them today.
