When the Bill Comes Due

Mike Glenn explains what it will cost to be a disciple of Jesus.

There is the moment when you turn over the price tag to see how much the item will cost.

There is the moment when the server places the bill on your table and you turn it over to see how much you owe.

Maundy Thursday, the Thursday of Holy Week, is the day when the bill comes due.  This is the day when everyone finds out just how much it will cost.

  • Judas finds out it costs more than 30 pieces of silver to betray Jesus,
  • Peter will find out what it means to have Jesus wash his feet… and discover how expensive it is to stay with Jesus.
  • Jesus will pass the bread and the cup to His disciples… and each of them will begin to understand just how expensive forgiveness can be.
  • The Father will weep with His Son as sin now demands that justice be paid…
  • The Son will accept the cost of saving sinners.  It will be His own suffering and death.

And in these moments of reflection, you and I will know the costs.

We will suffer a spiritual sticker shock at the price that was paid for us.

And then, it will hit us…

as it did Peter…

as it did Paul…

and Mary…

and all the rest…

what it will cost to follow.

Right now, the bill is coming due to us.

You want to be a disciple of Jesus?

This is what it costs.

Thursday is the day of Holy Week when the bill comes due.
