When Righteousness Prevails
The Bible tells us in 1 Corinthians 10:31, "Whether then you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all the glory of God." To be sure, voting falls under the "whatever" category. God wants us to vote for His glory... and a vote for His glory is one made not based on economy or personal gain, but the righteousness of God. Jesus, made it clear, "Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you" (Matthew 6:33).
So what constitutes a "righteous" vote?
THE RIGHTEOUS GOD
My friend Isaac Pitre is an African-American Pastor in Texarkana. He preached a marvelous sermon last Sunday at FBC Texarkana. One key point he made involved rights and righteousness. The following insightful comments were gleaned from his message.
God is the righteous One who sets the "right" rules and laws for a government and society to operate properly and enjoy His blessings. Man is unrighteous and has no capacity in and of himself to do right or set "righteous" parameters for life.
Whenever man clamors for "his rights," unless that desired right is rooted in the righteousness of God, man has no "right" to it. Rights are only valid if they proceed from His righteousness.
The Civil Rights movement of the 1960s was a righteous movement because it was rooted in the righteousness of God. All men are of equal value and deserve equal rights. That is biblical. God blessed the efforts of those fighting for their rights because those rights flowed from His righteousness.
THE RIGHTS TEST
We hear so much today about people's rights, but we have to run those rights through the righteousness of God. So... does government have a right to take away more and more of our God-given freedoms? No! Do people have a right to expect the government to pay for their lives? No! God says, "If a man will not work, neither shall he eat." (We are commanded to help those who cannot work, not those who will not work.)
If you and I will seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and cast a righteous vote, God will be glorified... and free once again to bless America.
