When God Talks

Ever wondered if God was talking to you? Today, be encouraged and reminded that you are His sheep and you hear His voice!

"My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me…." (John 10:27, NIV)

Ever wondered if God was talking to you? Want to know how to identify His voice? Would you like to discern what He's saying to you in a particular season of your life? No doubt, He's spoken to you many times and perhaps you did not trust in your ability to hear His voice? Today, be encouraged and reminded that you are His sheep and you hear His voice!

Here are a few things that have helped me to listen when God talks. Perhaps, they'll be helpful to you as well.

First – Believe, God is talking to you! "My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me…." (John 10:27, NIV) The Lord has things to share with you. You are His sheep and you have the ability to listen to His voice. Perk up your spiritual ears and tune in!

Second – Know, God will never say anything that contradicts His written Word. "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." (Psalm 119:105, NKJV) The primary way the Lord speaks to us is through His Word. He will never tell us anything contrary to His already written Word. He's not confused—so you can have confidence that He will never tell you to do something that His Word clearly forbids and He will never forbid you to do something His Word clearly favors. That's why it's so important that we dig into the Bible as a workman who studies and rightly divides His written Word.

Third – Listen, God will often speak a theme to your heart. "My heart is overflowing with a good theme…." (Psalm 45:1, NKJV) This is a big one! All the issues of life flow from our hearts and I have found the Lord helps us to hear and follow His will in a given season, by speaking a theme to our hearts. In other words, when we are seeking the Lord and asking Him to speak to us, He often does so in "themes." After a while, it will dawn on us as these themes start to overflow in our hearts.

For example, we may find ourselves consistently thinking along a certain line—a specific theme or flavor. Perhaps the word "faithfulness" or "rest" or "joy" or "forgive" or another word will seem to fill your heart. Maybe, it's a phrase—"be filled with the Spirit" or "follow your heart" or "trust in the Lord" or "new things" or any combination of words will begin to fill your heart. If you will learn to recognize the theme the Lord has overflowing in your heart—you will hear His voice and discover He wants to speak a timely, customized Word to you.

I remember a two-year period of time when the Lord put the theme "heart" in my heart. So, I studied the word "heart" in the Bible for a couple of years and, man-oh-man, did the Lord speak to me and teach me things that are still impacting my life. At other times, I've noticed a theme will overflow in my heart for a few days, weeks or months. Whether the theme is—"be strong" or "Father" or "pray" or "endure all things" or whatever, as I seek the Lord, get into His Word and give my attention to those themes, I hear His voice!

So, what is He saying to you? You are His sheep—you do hear His voice. His word to you will always agree with His written Word. What theme is filling your heart these days? Identify it. Study the Word on this theme and listen—the Lord is speaking a timely, customized word to you!

Say It: “Father, I am so glad that You are still talking! I am Your sheep and I do hear Your voice. I trust You and Your Word. Help me to identify the overflowing theme in my heart. I thank You for helping me recognize the timely, customized words You are speaking to me these days. I love You, Lord. In Jesus' Name. Amen."
