What's Most Important to You?

Description

Live for God while you have the opportunity. He alone can give your life meaning and purpose.

May 28th marked his birthday. I’m not convinced our Chesapeake Bay retriever, Joe, knew it was a special day, but he definitely enjoyed lots of extra attention and a treat-filled dinner.

We added Joe and Precious, a Golden retriever, to our family years ago. Joe was a yearling and Precious was 6-weeks old when we made the trip to Alabama to pick them up from the kennel.

From little more than puppies, Joe and Precious have matured into dogs. Although they still exhibit mischievous tendencies, the sprinkling of grey hairs throughout their coats reminds us they’re no longer young.

What would you do differently?

Time passes for all of us. How are you spending the time you’ve been given? If you had the opportunity to do things over, would you invest your time differently?

Take a look at some thought-provoking verses penned by the Psalmist David:

Lord, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him! Or the son of man, that thou makest account of him! Man is like to vanity: his days are a shadow that passeth away. Psalm 144:3-4

Always on His mind

It’s incredible to think the God of the universe, the One who created it all, would give much thought to you and me. But He does. He loves us. We are His crowning creation. His thoughts are continually about us.

Unfortunately, we don’t always focus on Him. In fact, much of the time, we’re focused on ourselves: how to make the next dollar, how to impress others, how to get the next promotion.

Wise investments

The truth is life is short. When we live for ourselves, our lives are shallow, and are missing the things of eternal value.

Jesus gives us some advice about making wise investments:

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Matthew 6:19-21

The right perspective

Time to readjust our focus:

  • Seek the kingdom of God
  • Seek His righteousness

When you and I put these things first, guess what? God takes care of all the rest:

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Matthew 6:33

Live for God while you have the opportunity. He alone can give your life meaning and purpose.

Your turn

Are you living for yourself or for the Lord? What step will you take to live for Him today?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, Thank You for the reminder that life is short. Forgive me for focusing so much on myself. Help me seek Your kingdom and righteousness knowing that You will provide everything I need. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
