What’s for Lunch?


Poton, a five-year-old sponsored child, and his mother, Sot, weed their garden in Laos. They grow lettuce, onions, cucumbers, and other vegetables.

Poton’s family started the garden after his parents took a training in organic gardening from World Vision and were provided seeds. Eating more nutritious food has improved the children’s health. 

Families in this community know too well about hunger. It’s an unfortunate inheritance that their parents and grandparents endured as well. Many in this village are among the 30 percent of rural Lao residents who live below the $1 a day poverty line.

Every morning, Sot tends the dry-season garden, carrying watering cans, ripping out weeds and making sure the insects aren’t attacking the vegetables.

The skills are new to her. She’s learned how to grow an organic garden during the dry season after World Vision provided her and her neighbours with training and vegetable seeds.

Quickly realizing the benefit, dozens of families dug the hardened soil, planted the seeds and carried what little water they could to the garden to make the vegetables grow.

Just a few weeks after, the first leaves of lettuce were plucked. Since then, cucumbers and spring onions.

“Now, we eat from it everyday,” Sot says.
