What Is Jesus Speaking to Your Heart?
“Whether you turn to the right or to the left your ears will hear a voice behind you saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it.'" Isaiah 30:21 (niv)
When my father-in-law, Ralph, was dying with cancer, my husband and I prayed that we would be a comfort to our family. It was such a terrible time of sadness, of never knowing really what to say or do. We just tried to be available when we were needed for practical things, as well as to listen, hug, pray for and love all of those involved—especially my husband’s mother, Barbara.
One evening after visiting them on a very difficult day, Stone and I were preparing to leave. We only lived a few miles away, so we rarely spent the night at their house. As we were gathering our coats, an amazing thing happened. In the same instant we both felt the Lord speak very clearly to our hearts and He said, “Stay.” So we did.
That night, we prayed beside Ralph’s bed. Stone and I asked the Lord to send angels to minister peace and to release Ralph from his suffering. Then we kissed Barbara goodnight and went to our room on the other side of the house.
We had scarcely gotten into our pajamas when we heard her cry out. We met in the hall as she was running toward us, and together we walked back to their room. Ralph had peacefully passed from this world into eternity…and we had the privilege of being there, for him and for her.
