We Thought Trixie was the Perfect Present

Description

Don’t be deceived by the temptations of the world, no matter how good they look. Don’t hang on to them, thinking you can control the outcome. You can’t.

Hear

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it (1 Corinthians 10:13).

Believe

Let me tell you about Trixie. She was the cutest puppy in the world. Jeanna found her at a no-kill shelter in north Texas and adopted her as a birthday present for our youngest daughter, McKenzie.

The look on her face when she first saw Trixie was priceless. All indications were that this was a perfect match and McKenzie and Trixie would be best friends for life.

But it didn’t take long before that cute puppy started biting and attacking us. We took her to several dog trainers and followed their instructions. One was for us to yell “ouch” every time Trixie tried to bite us. Soon “ouch” was all you heard, day in and day out.

We tried everything, but nothing worked. When she bloodied Mckenzie’s grandmother, we knew we couldn’t keep her.

It was heartbreaking for us when we took her back to the animal shelter. As I have thought back on that experience, I’ve drawn some parallels to our experience with the temptations of the world.

The temptations of the world look good and inviting, at least on the surface. But when we give in, we find out a different story. Sin can bloody us emotionally and cause great harm. We all know this to be true. As Paul wrote, this is “common to mankind.”

But there is a way out. God’s grace will give you the power to turn and flee, to say “no” to sin and “yes” to Jesus Christ.

Live

Don’t be deceived by the temptations of the world, no matter how good they look. Don’t hang on to them, thinking you can control the outcome. You can’t.

And besides, they will never give you what you already have in Jesus Christ.
