Vegetable Testimonies

Description

Do you too struggle to keep your home running like a Proverbs 31 woman "should?"

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. (Colossians 3:23-24, ESV)

We are told that we should write his word upon our hearts, but when it comes to this verse, I think we moms should write it across our children’s job charts, the bathroom mirror...hey, perhaps tattooing it across our foreheads would be a good idea too.

Is it just me, or do you struggle as well with setting up a system of chores in your home that doesn’t just get things done, but more importantly, gets them done with a cheerful attitude?

Adults go to work each day knowing that in two weeks, a paycheck will be our reward, allowing us to do frivolous things like buy groceries and pay the mortgage and heating bills. I know it’s a carrot in front of my cart that motivates me to get out of bed. (And before you all go writing me, I recognize that this is an extension of ministry—being a light at my workplace—I’m just making a point here). How do we help our children see that the carrot to chores is pleasing the Lord? At what age can they fully grasp that? Can they learn that via osmosis from watching us? Or, do we grunt and moan so much as we do work around the house we are actually not living this verse out ourselves?

Our homes testify to the degeneration of this world. Left alone, without intervention, things do not evolve into better states; my refrigerator vegetable drawer is proof. In a perfect world, I would have served them before they turned into fuzzy mush. Do you too struggle with keeping your home running like a Proverbs 31 woman "should?" Lord give us mercy, grace and wisdom to instill into our children the virtues of finding joy in service by first exercising and living out this truth in our own lives today.
