For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39 ESV)
The love of God is truly incomprehensible. That He could love me is crazy in itself, but then to realize that He loves murderers and pedophiles as well causes me to question how on earth could He?
But He does.
The same blood that washes away my sins can also release the worst criminals of their grotesque and inhuman depravities. Which is amazing – but to many may seem unfair. I’ve met a few people who are victims of crime, and the thought that the person who caused them such pain can find redemption and an eternity with Christ doesn’t always sit well with them.
But then there are people like Corrie Ten Boom, Robert Rule and Bryan Clay who have miraculously forgiven those who murdered their loved ones. The crimes committed were inspired works of the enemy . . . and the forgiveness a divine work of our Savior.
Father, what a crazy, incomprehensible love You have for us. That You gave Your Son over to be shamed, beaten and brutalized, laying down His life on the cross for all. For all. Fill us Holy Spirit with Your love that we can move past wrongs inflicted on us and those we care for, and into the freedom and light of forgiveness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
