“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’” Hebrews 13:5
To have a life free from the love of money, is a wonderful life. Paul is teaching us in Hebrews that we need to be content with what we have. Recently I went to Uganda and experienced first hand what Paul is talking about in this verse.
The people in the village that we visited were content with what they had, and they did not have much. Actually, by American standards, they did not have anything. I was invited into several homes while visiting this village and non of the homes I entered had tables or chairs, but they had a worn out bench and a straw mat to sit on, non of them had a kitchen, but a wood fire outside with one pot to cook with.
None of the families that I visited had a car, a motorcycle or a bicycle. None of these homes had electricity or running water. But, these families were content. They were content with one meal a day, they were content with the health of their children, and the love that they shared. Every family greeted us, the Americans, with love and smiles. The families sat on the dirt floor, giving us the bench. Some families gave us fruit they had picked for that day, and they wanted us to take it.
The Ugandan people and their willingness to trust Christ with their lives will forever change me. They have realized that Christ is enough. The people of Uganda know that life is not promised to them, because so many of their people have died from starvation, AIDS and disease. They know that they are not promised of a great wealth or prosperity, most of them were born and will die in that village. But, they seemed to understand that God is enough, and his promise to never leave or forsake them, was enough.
