“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6
Have you ever heard of the term declination? I don’t think many have. Let’s see if I can put it into simple terms… a compass points north because of a giant iron ore deposit in northern Canada. It is an enormous magnet that draws the needle of every compass. Trouble is, that it’s not TRUE north. It’s 16 degrees off from the North Pole. So, depending on where you are in this vast world, you must compensate for this lack of precision. And, if you don’t factor this into your expeditions, you can wind up WAY off course.
It blows me away, at how much our spiritual lives are a reflection of this phenomenon. We’ve all been told things by our parents, or grandparents, or pastor or friends that don’t line up scripturally. We love these people and believe every word that precedes from their mouths. Sometimes, we don’t search the scriptures on our own to find what is contained within. And, so, we set our trajectory on what seems right, never double checking our course is a sure one.
As overwhelming as this may seem – there is one course of action that is always a safe one. The words, “Your will be done,” are easily spoken, but much more difficulty lived out. As we aim to bring praise and glory to God with our lives, we will align more and more with His will. He calls us to die to the selfish, ruined parts of our soul.
And, so… we find ourselves off course because of following the desires that battle within us. God meets us, right where we are at, recalculates his omniscient GPS unit, and guides us once again straight to His will for our lives. We simply need to trust Him and follow His leading, leaning not on our own understanding, and He will make straight our paths.
Prayer: Thank you for how gracious You are LORD! Thank You for forgiving us and meeting us right in the midst of our messiness. Thank you for laying straight paths before us, and guiding us, amidst the chaos of this world, true north.
