“Then the earth reeled and rocked; the foundations of the heavens trembled and quaked, because he was angry. Smoke went up from his nostrils, and devouring fire from his mouth; glowing coals flamed forth from him. He bowed the heavens and came down; thick darkness was under his feet. He rode on a cherub and flew; he was seen on the wings of the wind. 2 Samuel 22:8-11 (ESV)
I remember the first time I studied the names of God as a young woman and discovered El Roi – the God Who Sees.
As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, this wonderful insight into God’s character – that should have brought me peace – instead enraged me. He saw? He was there?
Then why didn't He intervene?
However, as I matured and studied more, I fell deeper and deeper in love with Him, and began to understand His purpose. In fact, the study guide on The Names of God that I once threw across the room in anger, I now treasure.
The abuse that the enemy intended for evil, the Lord has used for good. I've had the absolute privilege of sharing my testimony with women and leading them to freedom. Watching the broken get set free of their anger and pain, and seeing them bloom is my passion. It’s what I was created to do. And El Roi knew that. He saw my past . . . and my future . . . and designed me to do just that.
But, there are times when I do need to know there will be justice, and that He is enraged with what happened to me. During those times, I read 2 Samuel 22 and close my eyes, imagining my God swooping down. He is my true hero . . . and He loves us something fierce. I pray that you too will find comfort in knowing that He sees . . . and He swoops.
