Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive a crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.
We rush in, as moms, always trying to protect our child from every hurt and every hard situation. This is a natural instinct for us moms. However, as our children grow, we need to love them even greater and allow them to experience hard times and hurtful situations. During these trials, that is when our children learn and grow. It would be very sad for your child to reach adulthood and never to have gone through a difficult circumstance and come out on the other end.
How do we knowingly watch our child suffer in life? Learning to navigate a trial in life is a process. Children do not come into the world knowing how to handle such things. Your job as a mom is not to fix, but to teach how to work through it themselves. We need to give them empathy, “I know this is a hard situation. I remember a time when I was young and my best friend hurt me.” We need to listen. Listening can be a powerful thing to someone who is hurting. We need to ask questions, “How do you think you should handle this situation? Or What is your next step? Have you prayed about this situation and asked God for His wisdom?”
Teach your child “how” to navigate through life while they are still under your roof, then when they grow up they will be able to persevere in the harsh, cold world.
Prayer: Father, Thank You for never leaving us no matter how difficult life gets. God, I know my child will go through hard times. I need Your strength and discipline to keep me from jumping in and fixing their world. God, when I am tempted to “fix”, remind me of James 1:12, that You have a crown for those who persevere. Always remind me that the world I am living in now is temporal.
