Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. (1 Peter 5:7 ESV)
My husband and I recently returned from a two week road trip. In our absence, our precious pup had taken on the annoying habit of compulsive licking. Now, I’m not talking about licking her paw or lips, but anything and everything. She was tonguing the carpet, bedding, exposed feet, anything – all the time.
A quick Google search showed that this was a sign of emotional trauma coping. I guess being separated from me – the one her whole world revolved around – caused her to comfort herself by licking. Go figure.
As instructed by the online article we would stop her mid-lick and offer quality time with her master . . . walks, play, or affection. Gradually the trauma tick diminished and now she only does it occasionally. But it got me to thinking about my own trauma ticks.
We all have things or habits in our lives that we turn to when we are insecure or frightened, (ice cream, shopping and chick flicks to name a few) but these are only unhealthy distractions that leave us unsatisfied and our emotional and spiritual wounds open and undealt with. How much better to go to the feet of Jesus for some quality time with our Master, which is what our soul is truly longing for.
Father, forgive us for licking our wounded hearts with empty, mindless web surfing, munching, shopping or other distractions. Deliver us from the habits that we run to for comfort and lead us to the cross and Your Word – the only place where true, lasting comfort can be found. Amen!
