Trapped in a Dark Mine
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” (John 14:6)
In many ways, that story is a parable of the gospel of Jesus Christ. All of us are trapped by sin at birth. We live in spiritual darkness. The only hope we have of escaping an eternity of death, doom, and darkness is through Jesus Christ. He came down to earth to save us.
What if one of the miners had said, “I really appreciate all those folks have gone through to get us out, but I’m a tough, strong, dedicated miner. You guys can go up through that tube if you want to, but I’m gonna try to make it out on my own.” What would you think of the miner who said that? You’d think he was an idiot . . . and he would have been! Unfortunately, that’s exactly how many folks respond to the good news of Jesus Christ. They really believe that one way or another, they’ll make it to heaven on their own. Yet there is only one way—through Jesus.
No matter how strong, independent, and successful you are, Christ is our only hope of salvation. There is only one way out of escaping doom.
