1 Timothy 4:7 (NIV®)
Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives' tales; rather, train yourself to be godly.
What immediately leaps out to me from this verse is that the responsibility for training in godliness is personal. Paul says we have to choose to train ourselves. Somebody else can’t train for us. Just like someone else’s workout at the gym isn’t going to help you or me a bit, someone else’s godliness won’t make you or me a more faithful disciple of Jesus. Others can present you with opportunities, give you a little information, encourage you along the way, and tell you when you’re heading in the wrong direction. But you and I have to be willing to train ourselves for godliness.
Heavenly Father, I want to train for godliness. Give me perseverance to keep pushing ahead on the path toward godliness when I feel tired, or complacent, or good enough. Help me to keep this as a lifelong goal. In Jesus’ name, amen.
