Tone Your Spiritual Muscles
“It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he causes me to stand on the heights.” 2 Samuel 22:33–34 (niv)
My SUV rounded the curve and climbed farther uphill. A moment later I saw the deer and instinctively braked. We stared at each other briefly before he leaped effortlessly up the steep hillside. After making sure no vehicle was behind me, I gazed at the graceful animal as he joined two others waiting at the top.
I marveled at how perfectly God had fit the deer to move easily in their environment. Although deer begin life on trembling legs, Jesus strengthens and fine-tunes their muscles to handle rocky, hilly terrain with majestic grace.
Jesus works similarly in us by giving us the power we need to make it in the challenges of our environment. According to 2 Corinthians 1:21 (nlt), “It is God who enables us, along with you, to stand firm for Christ.” In the challenges of living well for Jesus, His power in us gives us what we need to stand…and to stand firm. That concept is echoed in 1 John 2:13–14 (msg): “Your fellowship with God enables you to gain a victory over the Evil One.”
Jesus’ vision for you is a victorious one. Just as deer wear the dignity and grace of their Creator, so do you. With Him, you can say, “Christ gives me the strength to face anything” (Philippians 4:13, cev).
Whatever the heights of your challenges, Jesus desires to tone your spiritual muscles to handle them. Stand firmly on the truth that His strength empowers you.
FAITH STEP: What are you facing that needs a fresh vision of Jesus helping you to stand firmly in His power? Ask Him to give you what you need for your current environment.
