Time to Take Stock

Description

Compare the concepts of 2 Samuel and Psalm 18 to develop an understanding of God's intervention and ability to show up in our lives!

Pray:

Lord, You are not a story in a book, but a living God who comes in the real situations of life.

Read:

2 SAMUEL 22:1-30

Reflect:

How has God shown up for you?

This chapter is, more or less, Psalm 18. In most Bibles the psalm is situated in the life of David "when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul." However, the context of 2 Samuel adds more color. This follows the ruthless consolidation of power with scenes worthy of a gangster movie (20:10). David has been involved in desperate fighting to the point of exhaustion (21:15-17), sometimes against enemies of mythic proportion (21:19-22). There have been ritual killings (21:7-9), and these kinds of events have been features of David's life as a whole. Poetic language (22:6) actually describes blood-curdling moments in his life when death was a real possibility.

So this poem is not a list of abstract concepts about God. It conveys hard-learned truth forged in the heat of life-and-death situations.

The statements about David's righteousness (21-25) may seem to contradict the details of his life. But this is a poem about the big picture and the reciprocal nature of David's long relationship with God (26-30). God's grace responds to the overall direction of his life.

Apply:

Write out a song of praise to God after the pattern of David's song, naming the real-life interventions of God.

Pray:

Lord, in the details of my life and in the grand picture may I learn who You are and see Your hand.
