"However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come." John 16:13, NKJV
It's really not fair. When you think of all the advantages God gives to believers – it's almost not fair for the rest of the world! What advantages? Salvation, eternal life, forgiveness, mercy, favor, grace, strength, wisdom, knowledge, power… and oh yeah… the God of the Universe living on the inside of you! Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. Just some slight advantages!
One major edge that believers get is a personal relationship with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit – the third Person of the Godhead – is the One who lives in us when we come to faith in Christ. Our bodies become the temple of the Holy Spirit and we are never, ever alone. God is always with us – on the inside!
Jesus promised us that the Holy Spirit would do something very unique and very special for every believer. Jesus said the Holy Spirit would "tell us things to come." This is a wonderful promise, and I encourage you to take Him up on it.
What does it mean? It DOESN'T mean that the Holy Spirit will tell you everything about the future of everything. He may not tell you who will be elected President or what the price of gas will be in ten years; but you can count on Him to tell you things to come in your particular life! Often, the Holy Spirit will give us a "heads up" on things to come; He will give us a "sense" or a "glimpse" or a "knowing" about something coming up. Sometimes, He'll give us a dream. We can't always put our finger on it, but somehow we "know" things to come. The Holy Spirit doesn't always give us a detailed map of the future, but just enough information for us to take the steps of faith that are required. Sometimes He tells us things so that we can pray or prepare.
In our lives, we've come to expect the Holy Spirit to show us things to come in our family, church and general life. We are not expecting to be taken "completely by surprise" on anything, because Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would tell us things to come. We've faced some challenges in the past few years, but when we reflect on things, we can see the Holy Spirit has given us a "knowing" about things to come and the grace and faith to push forward with Him!
Today, listen to the Spirit and discern if He is showing you things to come.
Say This: "Holy Spirit – thank You for showing me things to come. I trust that You will tell me anything I need to know so that I can pray or prepare. I am so glad that You are the Greater One and You live in me. In Jesus' Name. Amen."
