Therefore

Description

The heroes of faith, the "great cloud of witnesses," are our examples so that we can be reminded that God is not asking for perfection from us, He wants commitment.

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us." Hebrews 12:1, NIV

You know the routine. Whenever you see a therefore, you have to see what it is there for. This one is important, because, as we have talked about those heroes of the faith, those who have faithfully served God, in spite of the hardship, trusting Him no matter what, then we must also consider how that impacts me and you today.

I am thankful that God doesn’t leave us guessing as to what type of people we should be. If one reads the eleventh chapter of Hebrews, he will see the type of individuals God promotes. Guys like Abraham, Moses, Noah, and Isaac. Too impressive for you to emulate? What about Gideon, who was afraid to go into battle? What about Rahab, who made her money selling her body? What about David, who cheated on his wife and then used his power to have the husband killed in battle? Could you live up to their standards?

Why are these people credited by God for their faith? Because, in spite of their frailties, which by the way, Abraham, Moses, Noah and Isaac all had as well, they were people who wanted to please God. They didn’t always do as God would have had them to do, but the overall direction of their life, was to go wherever God lead them. They wanted to be obedient to their Creator. Do you?

We have these examples; these “clouds of witnesses”, so that we can know first of all that God is not asking for perfection. He is asking for commitment. He is asking for dedication. He is asking for the direction of our life to be turned towards Him.

That is what He has planned for us, and that is what will give Him the greatest satisfaction in us.
