The Way Up Is Down

Follow Jesus. He will lead you to a cross.

If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me (Matthew 16:24).

Success. Position. Power. They’re part of the edict of the culture we live in. And yet God’s blessing in your life and mine comes in direct proportion to the extent you and I are willing to give up our will, our goals, our dreams to His will. Nothing is more countercultural than that!

It’s what Jesus meant when He challenged His disciples to take up their cross and follow Him. The Bible says Jesus endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God—blessed by God with a position of power and authority.

Follow Jesus. He will lead you to a cross. But remember that after the cross come the resurrection and the power and the glory and the crown! That’s why the way up … is down.
