The Watchful Guide

The guidance of God becomes clearer the more we get to know the God of guidance!

The LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and for evermore. (Psalm 121:8)

How do I know which job to take? Where to live? What to study? Whom to marry? For all these sort of questions – as well as the routine issues of everyday life - we need the guidance of God. And the truth is, it’s not always easy to be sure of what that guidance is. But the guidance of God becomes clearer the more we get to know the God of guidance. The more we learn about him, the more we learn about his ways and the more we know instinctively what is right to do. Knowing what to do only assumes enormous proportions if we are uncertain about God himself or our relationship with him. If we see him merely as some sort of celestial careers adviser, then we’re missing the point! He is our loving Father who is constantly ‘there’ for us, constantly watching over us. We don’t have to persuade him to guide; he is always the watchful guide.

The Bible tells us that this watchful Father brings his guidance through many ways; through things like God’s word (the Bible), God’s people (both leaders and friends, and the counsel they bring), God’s gifts (such as prophecy or words of knowledge), God’s voice (that quiet inner conviction in our heart that we can’t explain), God’s hand (as he shapes circumstances, carefully opening and closing doors for us).  And when several of these means of guidance all come in to line, that is when it is most safe to step out.

Of course, we also need to remember that there are some means of guidance that the Bible clearly forbids, because of their link to occult powers; things like horoscopes, astrology, magic and consulting mediums and spiritists. (So if you’ve used any of these things, you need to repent of them and ask God to forgive you).

If you are seeking God’s guidance at this time, be encouraged that the Watchful Guide is always with you. He has a plan for your life, and he will lead you into it.

In your unfailing love you will lead the people you have redeemed. In your strength you will guide them to your holy dwelling.      (Exodus 15:13)
