The Ultimate Surprise Party

Because the coming of Christ is near, we are told to be calm and kind, not fanatical and harsh.

I have never had a surprise party, because I always knew it was coming. I usually knew the day and often the time. But there is a surprise party coming of which I do not know the day or the hour. It is the return of Christ. We are told a number of times to simply expect it, but we are not told when. Just that it is soon. Nothing is in its way. It is Imminent.

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God (Philippians 4:4-6).

Verse five told us that the Lord is near. Because he is near we are told to be calm and kind, not fanatical and harsh. We are told to rejoice and not get overwhelmed by problems of this age. The Greek word for near has the idea of the next immediate thing. Such immediacy should overwhelm many of the pains of this life.
