The Treacherous Creek

Description

Nothing could be more terrible than the invisible power that catches us and pulls us toward our suffocation and death. This is the picture that God has given us of the force of sin.

Just outside the town in California where I was born is a creek that winds across the country, eventually flowing into the Pajaro River. Many a spot along this creek would make a magnificent swimming hole, but no boys are ever seen there. It is not even necessary for parents to tell their boys not to go near these waters. Were any new boy to suggest a swim, others would quickly tell him that the name of the creek is Salsipuedes: Spanish for "Get out if you can."

There are quicksands in the creek. Legend has it that a man attempted to cross and was caught in the terrible grip of the sand; a Spaniard, coming by, called out to him, "Sal si puedes," and that is how the creek got its name.

Nothing could be more terrible than the locking of that invisible power that catches a man and pulls him down steadily to suffocation and death. This is the picture that God Himself has given us of the force of sin that holds every man and woman in this world until the redemption provided by Christ Jesus has been made effective in their lives.

My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent... but these men lie in wait for their own blood; they set an ambush for their own lives. (Proverbs 1:10,16)
