The Three Exhaltations
As Paul developed justification by faith in Romans chapter 5, he told us three things we can exalt about. First, he said we can exalt about the future glory of God. We will participate in God's glory. Then he said we can exalt in our tribulations because God works with them for our good so that we can develop patience and hope. Now he gives a third reality about which we can exalt,
10 For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
11 And not only this, but we also exult or boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation. (Rom 5:10-11)
The third is that we have received the reconciliation with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. We are at peace with God. He has offered reconciliation to us; he has removed every obstacle to our full acceptance by him. Happily we can rejoice about the great grace of our God. As we look at chapter 5, we see the benefits of justification by faith. We can exalt about our future; we can exalt about our tribulations, but best of all we can exalt about becoming the close friends of God through reconciliation.
