The Standard for Our Lives
Lamentations 3:40 (NIV®)
Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the LORD.
I once went to the hospital to pray for a man who was going to have serious surgery. I said, “I wouldn’t want you to face that surgery and the possibility of eternity without peace with God. Do you know if you were to die on the operating table, are you prepared to meet the Lord?” He looked me in the eye and said, “Preacher, I’m a whole lot better than the man who lives across the street.” And I said, “Well, I don’t know your neighbor, but unless he’s God, he’s not the standard.” You may be like this man and have the kind of neighbors who make you feel pretty good about yourself. Unfortunately, the only comparison that matters for eternity is our righteousness compared to God’s holiness. Jesus came not only to show us the righteousness of God but to bridge the gap between us and Him―a gap that we could never bridge on our own.
Heavenly Father, thank You that You give me all I need to live for You. Thank You for the standard we have in Jesus––who shows us how to live for You. Thank You for the gift of Your Word, which teaches me Your character and Your purposes in the earth. Thank You for the Holy Spirit, who guides my steps. May my life show my obedience to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
