The Source of Life
He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 1 John 5:12
What does it mean to “have” the Son of God? To have Him, according to the Apostle John’s words, is to have life—eternal life. Notice that John did not write, “He who believes in the Son has life (although that is true).” He chose to use the word “have” instead.
The use of this word is interesting. Think of how often it is used: “I have insurance.” “I have the money.” “I have a job.” To have something means that you receive all its benefits. In other words, it does whatever it exists to do for you. If you have a lawyer, he will stand up for you. If you have money, it will buy for you whatever it is worth. If you have health insurance, you receive its benefits.
So then, what is it that Jesus exists to do? First, Jesus lives to set His people free from sin and death. Second, He exists to glorify the Father. So, to have Jesus means that He has done for you what He exists to do. It is all His benefits and powers applied personally to your life. Because He has your life, you have His.
How, then, do we come to have Jesus? It is through faith. When we believe in Jesus, and surrender our lives to Him in that belief, we receive Him…all of Him. In other words, we “have the Son.” Therefore, we also have life. John 1 says that in Jesus is life, and that life is the light of men.
Singer/songwriter Fernando Ortega has a song with this chorus:
“Give me Jesus. Give me Jesus.
You can have all this world, just give me Jesus.”
Of all that you “have” in this life, what is most precious to you? Is it Jesus? He is the only One worthy of your praise.
Father, Thank You for sending Jesus to die for my sins. Because He has me, I have Him…and to have Him means I have life. Please help me to be a light that leads others to the life that is found only in Him. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
