The Price of Peace

God offers you all that you need.

Isaiah 55:1

Besides physically hungry, humans get emotionally and spiritually hungry as well. The issue is not whether we are hungry and thirsty people; we are. The question is what we use to fill ourselves. Just as people who eat a corn-based diet will grow malnourished from lack of niacin, so believers who eat a money-based diet will grow spiritually weak. And it appears that many are turning to what money can buy as a way to spiritually and emotionally nourish themselves.

For instance, in 1998 the average balance on an American credit card was $7,000. The average household has 10 credit cards. Those cards generated $65 billion in interest payments alone at an average rate of 18.9%. It is no wonder that 1.3 million households filed for personal bankruptcy, unable to pay their debts. This is by design, since an $8,000 credit card balance, paid off with the minimum payment each month at 18% interest, will take over 25 years to pay off at a total, including interest, of $23,432. Whatever it is Americans are buying to satisfy their desires doesn't seem to be working—and we don’t seem to recognize that it isn't working. We simply keep buying more.

Israel was in an extremely needy place on one occasion. They were in Babylon, in captivity, separated spiritually and emotionally from their home and their God. God called to them—the hungry and thirsty who had no way to buy the peace they so desired—and invited them to come to him. They had no money which could satisfy their need, yet God said to come and “buy and eat” (Isaiah 55:1). How would they buy without money? They would buy with belief.

God offered Israel, and offers you, all that you need. But what you need can only be purchased and received by faith. “Why spend money on what is not bread . . . on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare” (Isaiah 55:2). Emotional and spiritual peace are expensive, but they are free. Believe and buy all you need.

God’s Promise to You: “The peace you buy from me is guaranteed forever.”
