The Light of Life
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12
When I first moved to Uganda, which feels like so long ago, I lived in a tiny bedroom at the back of a pastor’s house without electricity or running water. At night as I crawled in bed, full of joy and absolutely exhausted, I’d light a candle and write in my journal all that I was learning. It was just one candle, but the light from that candle was enough to fill up the entire room. Suddenly I knew what Jesus meant when he said in Luke 8:16: “No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand so that those who come in can see the light.” Literally, I relied on that light from that one candle. Without it I couldn’t see what was in front of my face, let alone the needs around me.
In every decision, in every minute of the day, He is in each moment, lighting up the darkness. It is so much easier to see the light when you are searching for it, and we search for the light when we are surrounded by darkness. I feel so full of His love that my heart might burst. I take His Light and I put it on a stand so that the people around me can also see. Wherever you go, you carry with you the Light of the World. Hold it high. He is our hope in dark places.
