The King's Table

Description

Not only did Jesus place our feet under His table, He also set an example by washing the feet of His disciples.

Today’s Reading: 2 Samuel 8-10

Key Verse: 2 Samuel 9:7

So David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake, and will restore to you all the land of Saul your grandfather; and you shall eat bread at my table continually.”

In Chapter 9 we see the Lord’s kindness to King Saul’s descendants. Saul’s grandson, Mephibosheth, had a son, thus preserving the family name and inheritance. David stayed faithful to the covenant into which he and Jonathan, Saul’s son, had entered, (see 1 Sam. 20:14-16). How much more faithful will Jesus, the seed of David, be to the covenant He has made with His loved ones—we who believe in Him. Jesus’ new covenant is described in Hebrews 8-9. Our reading mentions twice that Jonathan’s son was lame. His feet sat under David’s table continually. This was grace, unmerited favor from David. Jesus has placed our feet under His table, seating us in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:4-9). God has “blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3).

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Lord Jesus, You not only place our feet under Your table, You also have set an example of washing Your disciples’ feet. I pray that, by Your enabling strength, I will do a better job of washing the feet of others, as their servant, in a variety of ways. Amen!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

I learned of the passing of former British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher on April 8, 2013. I was very aware of her strong Christian beliefs when she presented Carolyn Cox to the Queen as a candidate for a peerage. The Queen then elevated Carolyn to the House of Lords, where she became Deputy Speaker. The reason for all this was that Carolyn, as an educator, had championed the return of the study of the Bible into British schools. With the Prime Minister’s support, this was accomplished. It was Carolyn who, in a TV appearance on 100 Huntley Street, convinced us to enter the Sudan to free slaves and help a very needy people with food, schools and medical clinics.
