The Joy of Genealogy
Scripture: Genesis 36:1-19, 1 Chronicles 1:35-37, Genesis 36:20-30,1 Chronicles 1:38-42, Genesis 36:31-43, 1 Chronicles 1:43-2:2
To be honest with you, the readings weren't very exciting to me. What can I learn from a bunch of “sons of” verses? What is the purpose of us reading the genealogy of Esau? Maybe the same questions ran through your mind.
Could it be God wants us to recount the fulfilled blessing of Esau? I know you remember how Jacob stole Esau’s birthright. Do you also remember the heart-wrenching plea Esau made to his father?
"Not one blessing left for me? Oh, my father, bless me, too. Then Esau broke down and wept. His father, Isaac, said to him, "You will live off the land and what it yields and you will live by your sword." (Genesis 27:39-40b)
The “sons of” list demonstrates God’s faithfulness in honoring Isaac’s blessing over Esau. Esau became very wealthy from what the land yielded. His sons became dukes or leaders in the armies, thus fulfilling "live by the sword."
What kind of genealogy are we creating for our descendants? What will those who come behind us find? Our obedience to God matters to those who come behind us. Our relationship with the Lord will affect future generations. Maybe I like genealogy after all.
