The Great Picture of Love

Christ's death for us illustrates how deeply God loves us.

Paul desperately wants us to understand one thing – we are loved! To illustrate the depth of that love in its intensity, Paul gave a picture or an illustration. This illustration of the intensity of God’s love is Christ on a cross.

6 For while we were still hopelessly morally sick, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.

7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the beneficial man someone would dare even to die.

8 But God is continually recommending His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (Rom 5:6-8)

While we could not help ourselves or do anything for ourselves, Christ died for us. Paul said that was just the right time or perfect season. We had nothing to offer or nothing we could do in that season of weakness. So Christ's death for us illustrated deeply how much God loves us. Paul then said that God is continually recommending this love towards us. We need that kind of love which loves us in the face of our weakness and failure and helplessness, and we need God’s recommendation. His is a good recommendation!
