The Good, True, and Beautiful
The good, the true, the beautiful. Pretty much everything God is and does fits into these categories. That means that when you receive a good gift, it’s from him; when you discover a truth, it’s his; when you see beauty, he created it. All that is wonderful in this life is part of his design.
You’d think that would be self-evident, but many Christians have a hard time with undesignated goodness from unexpected channels, beauty that doesn’t fit a doctrine, or truth encountered beyond the written words. That’s because our minds create categories in which we expect to encounter God. Surprisingly to some—though should we really be surprised?—God loves to shatter our categories. The Artist behind the good, the true, and the beautiful encounters us in all of life, even those areas we never expected to see him.
If you want to be like God, be passionate about the good, the true, and the beautiful wherever you find it. Why? Because he is. There are plenty of distortions out there, so you’ll still need to be discerning. But these things come from him, at least in their purest form. He is a creator, after all—the original Creator—and his world is stunning burst of creativity. You capture his heart when you realize how his creativity has captured yours. Thank him for all goodness, embrace all truth, and celebrate all beauty. The Artist uses such things to draw his people ever closer to himself.
