The God of Truth

This is exactly what God is – absolute truth. His very nature and character is "truth"; he is absolutely upright, with nothing unjust, crooked or unreliable about Him.

Though everyone else in the world is a liar, God is true. (Romans 3:4, NLT)

"WYSIWYG""What You See Is What You Get"is a familiar expression to computer users. It means that what shows on your computer screen is exactly what you get when it is printed out on paper, so that you know where you stand and what you can expect. And this is exactly how it is with God: What you see is what you get! With Him, there is no distortion, no trickery, no nasty surprises, no lies; just absolute truth.

Of course, the concept of "absolute truth" doesn’t sit easily in post-modern, western society. "What sort of truth do you mean?" "It may be truth for you, but is it truth for everybody?" are the sort of questions that are often asked. And so the suggestion that there might be any kind of absolute truth – THE truth, truth that has a legitimate call upon everyone – is strange indeed.

But this is exactly what God isabsolute truth. His very nature and character is "truth"; he is absolutely upright, with nothing unjust, crooked or unreliable about Him. And therefore his words and promises are absolutely true; what He says, He means; what He says, He does. He is completely dependable and reliable, unchanging and unchangeable.

What this means is that we don’t find that God is one thing today but something else tomorrow, or that He revealed Himself as one thing in the Old Testament but as something different in the New. Nor does He appear as one thing in Bible times but as something utterly different today. Unlike moving shadows, He doesn’t change, as He Himself assures us: ‘‘I the Lord do not change" (Malachi 3:6). His promises of old still hold true now, for He Himself is truth, eternal truth.

Of course, the devil tries to get us to doubt God, especially when we are looking to lay hold of His promises. Don’t listen to "the father of lies" (John 8:44); listen to the Father of Truth, your unchanging, faithful God; the "God who does not lie" (Titus 1:2). Take hold of His unchanging truth again today!

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. (James 1:17)
