The Giving God

Jesus describes God as a giving and generous father.

This month's devotionals are all about God the Father. When it comes to the feelings and thoughts of God, how can we possibly know them? It is foolish for us to think we can figure such things out. But that is why Jesus came so that we would not be captured in the quagmire of our own ignorance. In order to help us to understand our Father in Heaven better, Jesus would sometimes draw things out of our own hearts and experience to help us.

"What man is there among you, when his son asks him for a loaf, will give him a stone? Or if he shall ask for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he? Since then, you yourselves being evil, understand how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your father who is in heaven give what is beneficial to those who ask him!" (Matthew 7:9-11).

Notice very carefully that God is contrasted with earthly fathers and that he comes out much better. They are always tainted by sin, but he is not. The emotions of a good father for his son can be a stepping stone to understand the Father's emotions for us. Those emotions are kind, fatherly, and pure.
