The Gift of Children

Jesus elevated the importance of children and child-like faith.

Matthew 18:5 (NIV®)

“Whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me.”

Jesus introduced a radical idea in Matthew 18. By this time, Jesus had a reputation. Crowds gathered wherever He was. When He was traveling through Jericho, the most powerful man in town wanted to have lunch with Him. But on this day He attached enormous significance to the life of a child, in a society where children were seen as disposable. Jesus taught that children are valuable and deserve to be treated with dignity, a principle that has shaped Christianity from that day until now.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of children. Thank You for the joy they bring to our lives. Help us to be the parents and role models You would have us to be. Give me wisdom and strength to be a man of God who is worthy of their respect and imitation. In Jesus’ name, amen.
