The Fear Factor: The DNA of Toxic Fear

Description

When we edge out God's unconditional love as our source of security, we become dependent on at-risk sources of security and self-worth.

What is the root cause of toxic fear... it’s common denominator? The answer lies in edging out God’s unconditional love and promises as our source of security and self-worth. When this happens, we become addictive in our dependence on at-risk sources of security and self-worth.

A good definition of addiction is: an ever-increasing desire for something that has an ever-decreasing ability to satisfy. It is said that addicts are ever more self-centered and self-destructive than when they think their source of supply is at risk.

When we think the source of what we rely on for a feeling of security and self-worth is at risk, toxic fear poisons our decisions and relationships in a wide variety of ways.

Pause and Reflect:
Which of the following resources do you tend to rely on as a source of your sense of personal security and self-worth?
  • Physical appearance
  • Heritage
  • Material wealth
  • Relationships
  • Intelligence
  • Skills and abilities
  • Education
  • Hard work
  • Status
  • Reputation
  • Past Success
  • Other

Which of these sources of your sense of security and self-worth can you rely on 100% of the time?

This is what the Lord says: "Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight," declares the Lord.-Jeremiah 9:23-24
