The Eager Father

When you pray, what is the picture that you should have in your mind and heart?

When you pray, what is the picture that you should have in your mind and heart? I suggest the picture of Luke 15:20: "And he got up and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him, and felt compassion for him, and ran and embraced him, and kissed him."

The picture we should have in prayer is that of God the Father turning eagerly to meet us just like the father in this parable is running to meet his son. The son is walking towards the father in a miserable state, but the father is running towards him.

The language of the Father/daughter and son relationship we see in the New Testament has to be understood through pictures like Luke 15. The Father has an eagerness to meet with us and talk with us. We are like the prodigal son, apprehensive about what reception we will receive, and the parable tells us what the reception will be that the Father has in store for us. It is eager, He will run. It is understanding, He will feel compassion. Compassion is when the emotions of another are embraced as one's own. It is deeply affectionate, He will kiss us. That is how the Father feels!
