The Depths of Identity

Regardless of our sin, we cannot lose our identity in Christ.

Can sin nullify our connection with Christ, our identity with Christ? God can’t abide sin, so when we sin, can he abide in us or are we rejected? The answer that Paul gives is radical. He said that even if a Christian is involved with a prostitute that does not break the connection with Christ! Even while we sin we do not lose our identity in Christ.

Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take away the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? May it never be! (1Cor 6:15)

Not only our person but our body parts are members of Christ. So we should not misuse that which is joined to Christ.

When Paul the Apostle exhorted Christians to avoid sin, he spoke to them about living from a position of privilege and not penalty. Since we have the privilege of union with Christ and since we will not lose that privilege, we should live in harmony with those privileges. The knowledge that we serve a non-abandoning God should create gratitude within the heart of the believer. That gratitude is the motivator that Paul wanted believers to use to live the Christian life. God won’t abandon you, so do not abandon your character!
